The release tightens cybersecurity defaults across the board — mandatory TLS 1.2 between system components, HTTPS for all web-facing traffic, and stronger operator password requirements enforced at next login. For facilities and IT managers responsible for sites running Protege GX, this update requires coordinated planning before it can be deployed.

What Has Changed in 4.3.402

Three changes define this release from a security posture standpoint:

Encrypted connections are now mandatory. Protege GX components — server, clients, SOAP service, web client, entry stations, and mobile apps — will only communicate over encrypted channels. TLS 1.2 is required between server and client components; HTTPS is required for all web and mobile traffic. Sites already running encrypted communications will see no disruption. Sites still using unencrypted connections will need to configure encryption before upgrading, or components will fail to communicate post-upgrade.

Stronger password defaults. Password requirements for operator accounts have been tightened. After the upgrade, every operator will be prompted to set a new password on first login. This applies equally to accounts used by SOAP integrations and mobile applications — those services will fail to connect until their credentials are updated. Identifying service accounts ahead of the upgrade is an important pre-flight step.

Server compatibility requirements. Version 4.3.402 requires a 64-bit operating system and SQL Server 2016 or later. Most current installations will already meet this bar, but older server deployments may require a migration as part of the upgrade project.

ICT’s Application Note 366 provides step-by-step guidance for each of these areas and is the definitive pre-upgrade reference for integrators.

The Upgrade Must Be Done Atomically

The most operationally significant requirement in this release is the upgrade sequencing rule: server, clients, SOAP service, and web client must all be upgraded at the same time. Mixed-version environments will lose inter-component communication. This is not an update that can be rolled out incrementally across a site over several days — it requires a planned maintenance window with all components updated in a single pass.

For sites with multiple operator workstations, remote clients, or third-party SOAP integrations, the coordination overhead is real. Facilities managers should expect their integrator to schedule this as a formal change-management event rather than a routine background update.

A New Web App Alongside the Legacy Web Client

This release also marks the general availability of the Protege GX Web App, ICT’s modern browser-based replacement for the legacy Web Client. At the time of this release, ICT is still rolling out full feature parity with the legacy client, so integrators and customers have two paths when upgrading a site:

Retain the legacy Web Client and apply the required encryption updates to bring it into compliance with the new mandatory connection requirements.

Migrate to the new Web App as the primary browser-based access experience going forward.

The Protege GX Web App Installation Manual includes a current feature comparison to help determine which path is appropriate for each site. For customers who rely on specific legacy Web Client features, it is worth reviewing that document before committing to a migration path during the upgrade window.

ICT has also used this release to refresh VMS integrations across several platforms, including Milestone XProtect, Genetec, Hanwha Wisenet WAVE, DW Spectrum, NX Witness, and Avigilon, keeping those partner integrations current with the underlying platform changes.

What This Means for Protege GX Sites Under Mallen Management

For building owners, strata committees, and facilities managers with Protege GX deployed as part of their access control and visitor management infrastructure, the practical takeaways are straightforward:

This is not an emergency patch — there are no active CVEs disclosed in this release. Upgrading on a planned schedule is appropriate.

The upgrade requires a coordinated maintenance window. It cannot be done piecemeal.

Service accounts used by integrations and mobile apps must be identified and their passwords updated as part of the upgrade process — failing to do so will cause integration outages post-upgrade.

Sites running older server infrastructure (pre-2016 SQL Server or 32-bit OS) should flag this for assessment before scheduling the upgrade.

The encryption changes bring Protege GX in line with what IT and compliance auditors now expect as a baseline — a positive outcome for customers in regulated sectors such as healthcare, education, and financial services.

ICT’s move to quarterly updates signals a more structured cadence for keeping the platform current. For integrators and the building managers they support, that predictability is welcome — it makes capacity planning and change management more straightforward than ad-hoc release cycles.

If you manage a Protege GX site and are unsure whether your current server configuration meets the 4.3.402 prerequisites, or want to understand the impact on your SOAP integrations and mobile access workflows before scheduling an upgrade, contact your integrator for a pre-upgrade assessment.

Original source: https://www.ict.co/blog/protege-gx-cybersecurity-changes-and-what-you-need-to-know/

ICT has released Protege GX 4.3.402, the first in a new series of quarterly firmware updates for the platform.
